Ingredients
- 2 medium apples peeled cored and diced
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar for coating
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for coating
- 1 sheet parchment paper
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with the parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl beat the egg then whisk in the milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter until smooth.
- Add the diced apples to the wet ingredients, stirring to coat them evenly.
- Pour the dry ingredient mixture into the wet mixture and stir until just combined, taking care not to overmix.
- Scoop tablespoonfuls of batter and gently form into balls, placing them on the prepared baking sheet about an inch apart.
- In a small bowl mix the granulated sugar for coating with the ground cinnamon for coating.
- Roll each batter ball in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat all sides and return them to the baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes or until the apple balls are golden brown and set.
- Allow the apple balls to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Notes
- Use tart apples such as Granny Smith for a bright, tangy flavor.
- Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the apple balls light and tender.
- The cinnamon sugar coating intensifies as the apple balls cool, so apply while still warm.
- Serve warm for the best texture and flavor, optionally with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of honey.
